There are people who touch our lives, by being a positive & upbeat force. That’s how Bob Parker left his mark at the Centre & in our hearts. He was a hardworking volunteer at the hot meals, garage sales, bazaars & on the board of directors but what we all loved most was his sense of humour and his jolly disposition. We’ll miss you Bob!
The annual garage sale will be on May 25 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the arena parking lot & inside the Senior Centre. We’re gratefully accepting donations of gently used items such as jewelry, knick knacks, small appliances & furniture, art work, bicycles, books, puzzles, plants, crafts, toys etc. Vendors are welcome. Volunteers are needed to help sell the treasures. There will be a barbecue where you can enjoy a hot dog or hamburger & a cold drink. All the proceeds of this sale go to the Senior Centre programs. The Centre will be closed May 20 for Victoria Day. Enjoy your long weekend with family & friends.
All you card sharks get ready for a fun day at the bid euchre tournament on May 31 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Lunch is included in the tourney fee. Cash prizes to be won! For more information, call Eileen Tupholme at 519-425-2111 or the Centre at 519-268-2025.
It’s summer soon & the Thorndale Seniors’ get together will be held at a restaurant in St. Mary’s called “Stone Town Willow”. Please let June Rogers know if you’ll be attending so she can make reservations.
Come on out for the craft workshop on June 5 at 9 a.m. We’ll be making table favours for the summer hot meal. Please bring your scissors & glue gun. It’ll be fun chatting & drinking coffee & tea.
Get your tickets for the summer hot meal on June 12 at 12 noon in the arena auditorium. On the menu: barbecued ribs on a bun, French fries, salad, strawberry shortcake, tea/coffee & juice. Entertainment: BINGO. You’ll receive two cards with the price of admission. To reserve your tickets, call 519-268-2025.
The next movie afternoon will feature the flick “Quartet” on June 25 at 1 p.m. Popcorn, candy & cold drinks are included with the price of admission. About the movie: At a home for retired musicians, the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents. Stars: Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly. See you at the show!
The bus trip to “A Day in Hamilton” is sold out. There is a waiting list so if you’d like to go on this adventure, put your name on the list because you never know, you might get the chance to go. Please be at the Centre by 8 a.m. for an 8:15 a.m. departure. Keep your fingers crossed for a beautiful day!

Community Centre - 2010 Programs and Activities
Community Euchre
These fun evenings will continue every Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $3.00 per person. Please contact the Centre for more details on this activity.
Craft Group (Craft and Chat)
This class is held when scheduled from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Participants of this class will make decorations or party favours for the centre events i.e. Hot Meals, Socials etc. Instructor: Karen Gress
Hot Meals
Join the group for a delicious hot lunch served the second Wednesday of every other month (unless listed otherwise) at 12 noon in the Arena Auditorium. It’s only $10.00 for a full course meal including dessert & tea/coffee and entertainment (BINGO is a favourite ending to the afternoon). Call 519-268-7334 ext 708 for more information. Special Event Luncheons
Luncheons are held on certain Wednesdays at 12 noon in the Dorchester Arena Auditorium and everyone enjoys an excellent meal, along with great fun. The cost is $7.00 per person. Please contact the Centre for more details. Please purchase your tickets as soon as possible.
Pole Walking
Walk your way to fitness every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the arena walking track. The cost is pay-as-you-go $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.
What is Urban Poling? Urban Poling is a sport that combines the aerobic and strength building benefits of cross-country skiing with walking. This class is held in the Dorchester arena auditorium (walking track) or outside weather permitting. Urban Pole Walking is a full body, cardio-muscular exercise. Benefits include: 20-40% higher caloric expenditure for weight loss, 25% increased cardiovascular workout, highly effective for core muscle strengthening, reduced impact on knee/hip joints and increased stability & balance.
Computer Lesson
Beginner and intermediate computer lessons are available. These classes include instruction on general use of the computer, internet, email etc. Lessons are held Mondays - Thursdays. Evening classes are available. The cost is $60.00 for members & $70.00 for non-members for a 5 week session (2 hours per class). Call 519-268-7334 ext 708 for more information.
Digital Camera Lessons
Learn how to operate your digital cameral, download your pictures, crop your photos, etc. Please bring your digital camera, a blank memory card & your USB cord to class with you. The cost is $60.00 for members & $70.00 for non-members for a 5 week session. You should have some computer knowledge before taking the camera course. Please call 519-268-7334 ext 708 for details.
Thorndale Seniors Group
The Thorndale seniors meet the first Monday of every month at 1:30 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Thorndale. On occasion there is a pot luck lunch and these begin at 12:30 p.m. There is a regular business meeting followed by a speaker or entertainment and a delicious snack is served at the end of the afternoon.
Senior Choir
New voices are always welcome in this choir. If you enjoy singing come and join this fun group every Friday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. with Mary Kaiser as the leader/pianist.
Quilting
This creative group meets every Monday from 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Mary Tenkate and Joanne Smulders will instruct this program. It’s only $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members. They go on exciting outings i.e. Shop & Hop. The first Monday of every month the group will be sewing bed pads for cancer patients.
Bridge/Bridge Lessons
Come out for a morning of fun and friendship every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. It’s $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members. If you’d like to play bridge but don’t know how, sign up for bridge lessons. Instructors: Elaine Davies & Joanne Perry. Classes are $15.00 for members & $25.00 for non-member for an 8 week session. Please register in advance so that we’ll order the correct amount of instructional books etc.
Knitting & Crocheting Lessons
This talented group get together to create beautiful items & if you need any direction instructor Shirley Legg will help you. This class is every Monday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. It’s $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.
Bid Euchre
Join us every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a fun evening of bid euchre. There is a lunch served and the evening will only cost you $3.00.
Pilates
This class runs for 8 weeks on Wednedays from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The cost is $50.00 for members and $60.00 for non-members. Instructor: Krista Dolbear. Pilates is a method of exercise endorsed by physicians for almost a century. It has become one of today’s most sought after workouts that helps strengthen and condition muscles, reduce and eliminate back ache, dramatically improves posture, flexibility and balance as well as getting you on your way to long, lean, toned muscles and a flat stomach.
Gentle Yoga
Join certified instructor, June Ross, on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. as she leads you through a gentle, invigorating class that will increase your flexibility, build strength and create balance, while reducing stress. The class will end with a guided relaxation. This 8 week course is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members or $4.00/$5.25 pay-as-you-go.
Tai Chi
This class takes place every Monday from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with June Ross. Tai Chi is an ancient form of Chinese exercise using slow, rhythmic movements to help improve balance, breathing and help maintain a better range of motion. This 8 week course is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members or $4.00/$5.25 pay-as-you-go. This class is also offered in Thorndale at the Library on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Clogging
Diana Dietrich will teach you the steps to some fun dances every Wednesday: Beginners from 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. & Intermediate from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The cost $40.00 for members & $50.00 for non-members for a 8 week session (1/2 the price for 1/2 hour beginners class).
Line dancing
Every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. to learn fun, upbeat line dances. Beginners are welcome to arrive at 8:30 a.m. for some extra instruction on the steps. It’s great exercise.
Square dancing
This Instructional Community Dance Program is lead by caller Art Ferris and runs every Wednesday from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. The cost is $3.00 per person, pay as you go.
Carpet Bowling
Come out and learn this enjoyable sport. This game is similar to lawn bowling but it’s indoors. Join the group every Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. It’s $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members. This sport is also offered in Thorndale at the Lions Hall every Monday (except the first Monday of every month) at 1:30 p.m. No charge.
433 Euchre
Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Shuffleboard
Join the group every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the arena. It's $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members. It's lots of fun! For more information call 519-268-7334 ext. 708.
