Marriage

 

Please note that the Municipality of Thames Centre does not conduct civil marriage ceremonies at this time.

 

Obtain a Marriage Licence

AN APPOINTMENT TO OBTAIN A MARRIAGE LICENCE WILL BE MADE AFTER MARRIAGE LICENCE APPLICATION AND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED.  

Licences may be obtained in person at the municipal office for marriage ceremonies taking place anywhere in the province of Ontario. At least one party to the proposed marriage must apply in person. However, the application must be signed by both applicants. The licence expires 3 months after the date of issue.

To get a marriage licence, you will need to:

  • Fill out a marriage licence application (applications are available at the municipal office, or may be downloaded and completed)

  • Bring the completed application to the municipal office (signed by applicant and co-applicant)
  • Show 2 pieces of government-issued identification for each person getting married.

                Two pieces of government-issued identification is required for each person getting married. One piece of identification must be either a birth certificate or passport and include your photo. Examples of government-issued identification include:

    • government issued birth certificate, including any change of name certificates
    • valid passport
    • record of immigrant landing
    • Canadian Citizenship Card
    • valid driver's licence
    • valid Ontario photo card
  • Applicants aged 16 and 17 must have written consent of their parents
  • Final proof of divorce, if applicable
    • Within Canada:  Applicants who have been divorced within Canada are required to produce either the original or a certified copy of the Decree of Absolute or Certificate of Divorce.
    • Outside Canada:  Applicants who have been divorced outside of Canada are required to follow a different process in order to ensure that thier divorce is honoured in this Country. Please visit the Service Ontario Website for further information to see what documentation the Province of Ontario requires.
    • Widowed Applicants:  Applicants who are widowed are not required to provide proof of the death of their spouse.
  • Pay a $120 application fee (cash or debit only)

Order a Marriage Certificate

After the marriage ceremony, your chosen officiate mails your completed marriage licence for registration to the Office of the Registrar General. Marriage certificates can only be obtained from the Registrar General. No marriage documentation is held at the municipal office.
