How To Join - Memberships and Renewals
Please note that members must be age 50 or over. The membership fee is $22.00 (includes GST) per person.  Membership renewal is every January. If you would like to become a member, please drop by anytime Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We look forward to meeting you.

The Lions Senior Centre is located at 2066 Dorchester Rd and is attached to the Community Centre and Arena Complex.

Welcome our new co-op student, Hailey Minogue. She attends Lord Dorchester Secondary School and she’s in grade 11. I’m looking forward to working with her this term. She’s is already doing a great job! Make sure to say hello, if you see her around the Centre.

Hot off the press! The News & Views are ready for pick up. Check out all of the upcoming spring courses, special events and bus trips.

Get your tickets for the St. Patrick’s luncheon which will be on March 6 at 12 noon in the arena auditorium. On the menu: corned beef on a Bun (Sauerkraut), potato salad, potato chips, baked beans, tea/coffee & juice and cupcakes for dessert. There will be musical entertainment by “The Scallywags” (folk roots music). feicfidh mé ann thú! (see you there!).

New acrylics & water colours lessons will begin in March in the art studio from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. It’s a 3-part series on March 8th, 22nd & 29th. Discovering your own creativity with Acrylics & Water Colours. Instructed by artist Susan Hewitt Graham. (all supplies included). There is a limit of 10 participants, so sign up as soon as possible.

The next foot care clinic which will be held on March 12 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Contact Nan at 519-686-0971 to schedule a time to have your feet looked after.

Square dance caller Merv Reid will be here on March 12 & 26 at 1:30 p.m. to call for square dancing. No partner needed. Come out for an afternoon of dancing!

We have several exciting excursions planned such as: “Irish Kitchen Party” Trip, March 1. Depart: 9:00 a.m., Return: 5:45 p.m. Trip includes coach bus transportation to "Greg Frewin Theatre" in Niagara Falls, An Irish themed buffet lunch, and a performance by the American Rouges.

“A Day in St. Jacobs” Trip, April 11, Departs: 8:15 a.m., Returns: 5:00 p.m. Trip includes coach bus transportation, free time at St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market, 1 hour at St. Jacobs Model Railway, free time at St. Jacobs Village and High Tea at Homewood Suits including an informative talk by Waterloo Regional Museum. Plentiful menu: Loose leaf tea, Coffee, Juice. Selection of delicious finger sandwiches, Scones and Divine Sweets.

“Conestoga Place & Sentimental Journey” Trip. May 3, Depart Thorndale: 9:30 a.m., Depart Dorchester: 9:45 a.m. Trip includes coach bus transportation, buffet lunch (2 Meats, Potato, Vegetable, Gravy, Coleslaw, Pasta Salad, Rolls & Butter, Coffee/Tea and Desserts), Tom Leadbeater will be entertaining during lunch and then we go to WMB Church for a Guse Family Production of Sentimental Journey (A musical Journey through the Decades from the 1920's onward...).

“Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum & Royal Botanical Gardens” Trip. June 11, 2019. Depart: 8:30 a.m. Trip includes coach bus transportation, guided tour of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Lunch at Rock Garden Café & guided tour of the Rock Garden at Royal Botanical Gardens and free time to shop at Terra Greenhouses.

The next movie afternoon will be on March 20 at 2:00 p.m. Popcorn, candy & beverage will be served. Feature presentation: “A Star is Born”. Movie Overview: A musician helps a young singer find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. Stars: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott.

A day of watercolours with Toni Poole on March 26 from 10am - 3pm. Student grade materials provided ... light snacks available. Bring your own lunch or pop out to one of the local restaurants. Toni has a wonderful web site with a gallery of her work: https://twogatesartstudio.webs.com.Two watercolours projects will be completed ... “In this session we will learn how to modify colours on your palette, work with layers of washes to add values from light to dark building up layers of luscious colours. The morning session (Blue Poppy) will give us a feel for mixing and applying colour to paper.  This will give us practice using wet in wet and layering to add depth and definition to our painting.  We'll get started on the afternoon project just before lunch. In the afternoon we will use the techniques we've learned to gradually complete a beautiful Hydrangea bloom.  From beginning to end you will have fun with these 5x7 projects and gain a great foundation for working in watercolour.” Register now!

The bid euchre tournament will be on March 29 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Enjoy a fun day of friendly card competition. Arrive a little before tourney start time to enjoy a hot coffee & some Tim Bits. Silk painting with Arale Vallely will be on April 30 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Bring your own lunch or go to a local restaurant. Information: Arale has a beautiful web site ... http://artbyarale.com/floral which shows off many of her creations. We will be learning how to create similar pieces using special paints on silk fabric. 

Will Graham will be running 5 workshops which are specifically designed for students aged 12+ but including adult art students too. These workshops will take place on April 30, May 7, May 14, May 21, May 28 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Art materials and light snack included. This is a wonderful intergenerational program where you can bring your grandchild and enjoy an evening of art.

Peter John Reid will be presenting 6 workshops specifically designed for acrylic painters. This series will be held on Tuesdays on May 7, June 11, August 6, September 3, October 1 and November 5. Student grade materials  and light snacks provided. Community Centre - Programs and Activities

Craft Group (Craft and Chat)
This class is held when scheduled from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.  Participants of this class will make decorations or party favours for the centre events i.e. Hot Meals, Socials etc.  Instructor: Karen Gress.  For Info: call (519) 268-2025.


Acrylic Painting Lessons
This New, Exciting Program will be instructed by artist Susan Graham.  These 6 classes will cover different techniques & ways of using acrylic paints with various subject matter.  Sometimes you’ll paint on paper, other times on canvas and you’ll also learn about pencil drawing/sketching.  For more information call (519) 268-2025


Hot Meals

Pole Walking
 
Walk your way to fitness every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the arena walking track.  The cost is pay-as-you-go $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.


What is Urban Poling? Urban Poling is a sport that combines the aerobic and strength building benefits of cross-country skiing with walking.  This class is held in the Dorchester arena auditorium (walking track) or outside weather permitting.  Urban Pole Walking is a full body, cardio-muscular exercise.  Benefits include: 20-40% higher caloric expenditure for weight loss, 25% increased cardiovascular workout, highly effective for core muscle strengthening, reduced impact on knee/hip joints and increased stability & balance.

Computer Lessons
Beginner and intermediate computer lessons are available for Windows 10 & MacBook.  These classes include instruction on general use of the computer, internet, email etc.  Also available are iPad classes.  Lessons are held Tuesdays - Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.  The cost is $60.00 for members & $70.00 for non-members for a 6 week session (1 hours per class).  Call 519-268-2025 for more information.


Digital Camera Lessons
Learn how to operate your digital camera, download your pictures, crop your photos, etc.  Please bring your digital camera, a blank memory card & your USB cord to class with you. The cost is $60.00 for members & $70.00 for non-members for a 6 week session.  You should have some computer knowledge before taking the camera course.  Please call 519-268-2025 for details.


Thorndale Seniors Group
The Thorndale seniors meet the third Wednesday of every month at 2:30 p.m. at the Thorndale Library. These "Wonderful Wednesdays" feature a guest speaker or entertainment and delicious light refreshments. For more information call 519-461-1150.

Senior Choir
New voices are always welcome in this choir.  If you enjoy singing come and join this fun group every Friday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. with Mary Kaiser as the leader/pianist.


Pickleball
Learn the skills and rules of the game.  Meet in the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12 noon.  For members only.  There is a $2.00 daily fee.  Paddles and balls are provided during the lessons.


Stitch and Chatter Club
Join this lively, social group for a fun afternoon of crafts from 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.. You are welcome to quilt, sew, knit, crochet, cross stitch etc. Bring your favourite craft to work on. If you’d like to learn to quilt, there are lots of helpers here to give you a hand. You don’t have to be a pro crafter, just come out to have fun, stitch away and have a chat with the gang. (except the 1st Monday of the month when the group Sews for Cancer). The cost is $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members per class. The session begins May 14th. Marlene McKnight is the organizer of this class. Join “The Ragged Edge Quilters” Guild.


Bridge
Come out for a morning of fun and friendship every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  It’s $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.


Bid Euchre
 
Join us every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a fun evening of bid euchre.  There is a lunch served and the evening will only cost you $3.00.


Pilates
This class runs for 8 weeks on Tuesdays & Fridays from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The cost is $60.00 for members and $70.00 for non-members.  Pay-as-you-go is $8.00.  If you register to participate twice a week, the cost will be $95.00 for members, $115.00 for non-members. Instructor: Laura Lea Devine.  Pilates is a method of exercise endorsed by physicians for almost a century.  It has become one of today’s most sought after workouts that helps strengthen and condition muscles, reduce and eliminate back ache, dramatically improves posture, flexibility and balance as well as getting you on your way to long, lean, toned muscles and a flat stomach.  Call (519) 268-2025 for more information.


DrumFit
This is a fast-paced, non-competitive fitness program that combines music, movement and drumming.  We only have one rule: YOU MUST HAVE FUN!  It is guaranteed to leave you smiling, inspired and wanting more!  This program runs for 8 weeks at a cost of $50.00 for members & $60.00 for non-members.  Drum sticks, balls and bases are all provided.  Certified DrumFit instructor: Diana Dietrich.  We encourage participants to sign up for the entire 8 week session.

Recorder Lessons
Wednesdays from 12:15 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.


Gentle Yoga
Join certified instructor, June Ross, on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. as she leads you through a gentle, invigorating class that will increase your flexibility, build strength and create balance, while reducing stress.  The class will end with a guided relaxation.  This 8 week course is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members or $4.00/$5.25 pay-as-you-go.


Chair Yoga
Chair Yoga with certified yoga instructor John Schieven. This class will run every Thursday from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Pay-as-you-go $4.00 members/$5.25 non-members. Benefits of chair yoga: increases circulation, strengthens muscles, increases flexibility, lubricates joints, improves range of motion & mobility, improves balance, eliminates toxins, calms the mind/relaxation and improves concentration.


Tai Chi
This class takes place every Monday from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with June Ross.  Tai Chi is an ancient form of Chinese exercise using slow, rhythmic movements to help improve balance, breathing and help maintain a better range of motion.  This 8 week course is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members or $4.00/$5.25 pay-as-you-go.  This class is also offered in Thorndale at the Library on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  


Step N Out Aerobics Class
This exercise program emphasizes: Balance, Breathing, Memory skills, Muscle coordination, Improved Circulation and Awareness of the mind, body, and spirit connection.  It combines Dance, Tai Chi, Core strengthening and Low Impact Aerobics, in a way that gradually gets your body moving, the way it used to.  Join instructor Bev Dukes every Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in the Arena Auditoirum.  Pay-as-you-go $4.00 for members and $5.25 for non-members.


Line dancing
Every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. to learn fun, upbeat line dances.  Beginners are welcome to arrive at 8:30 a.m. for some extra instruction on the steps.  The cost is $15.00 members/$25.00 non-members for an 8 week session or pay-as-you-go $3.00 members/$5.00 non-members.  It’s great exercise.


Square dancing
This Instructional Community Dance Program is lead by caller Tom Charlton and runs once a month from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  The cost is $3.00 per person, pay as you go.


Carpet Bowling
Come out and learn this enjoyable sport. This game is similar to lawn bowling but it’s indoors.  Join the group every Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  It’s $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members.  


433 Euchre
Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.


Shuffleboard
