Province Invests in Expansion at West Nissouri Public School
Mayor, MPP Recognize Provincial Funding
for Expansion of West Nissouri Public School
THAMES CENTRE – Local MPP Rob Flack joined Mayor McMillan, Councillor Tom Heeman, and Principal Ingrid Hollander at West Nissouri Public School in Thorndale this weekend to celebrate a recently announced provincial investment of $6.8 million to expand the number of student spaces available at the school.
"This is a significant investment in supporting student success in our community,” says Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Rob Flack. “Our government is committed to building modern learning spaces, and parents in our community can be confident that their children have access to the educational tools and opportunities they need to be successful."
The current West Nissouri Public School building has space for 392 students. The proposed addition would provide classroom space to accommodate an additional 207 students.
“We are grateful to the province for funding this school expansion,” says Bill Tucker. “This addition allows West Nissouri Public School to have the space to serve a rapidly growing community, while providing students in Thorndale with access to more modern facilities and increased educational opportunities.”
Construction timelines and additional project details will be shared by the Thames Valley District School Board as planning progresses.
Expanding capacity at West Nissouri Public School has been a community priority for several years.
“Public school funding is not a municipal issue, but Council has spent a considerable amount of time towards advocating for this expansion, because it’s important to residents in Thorndale,” says Councillor Tom Heeman. “This expansion will provide space for local families to keep sending their kids to school in Thorndale.”
“This school expansion is great news for the long-term health of our community,” noted Mayor Sharron McMillan. “Over this term of Council, we’ve persistently advocated for this project. We are grateful for the efforts of our MPP and the TVDSB in supporting those efforts, and to Minister Calandra for approving this funding.”
The West Nissouri Public School expansion was approved through the Ontario Government’s 2025–26 Capital Priorities Program, and was announced on April 28, 2026, as part of a $1.6 billion investment in building and expanding schools across Ontario.
