Thames Centre Plants 25,000th Tree

Municipality is Halfway to 25-Year Target in Year Three of Tree Planting Plan

THAMES CENTRE – This afternoon Councillor Danielle Lockie joined the municipal Public Works team to plant trees at the Thames Centre Operations Centre.

The planting of these Blue Spruce trees officially puts Thames Centre’s tree planting total at 25,000 trees since the adoption of its Tree Planting Plan in January 2024. The official Tree Planting Plan called for the planting of 50,000 trees in Thames Centre over the next 25 years.

“We’re proud of the extraordinary progress that’s been made,” says Councillor Lockie, who also chairs the Environmental Advisory Committee. “Increased tree planting was identified as a top issue by the public when we hosted our Green Town Hall meetings in 2024, and we’ve seen residents, businesses, and community groups all take action to support local tree planting.”

During public consultations that took place in the fall of 2024, 73% of local residents identified tree planting plan as a high priority.

Thames Centre has partnered with groups like the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, and Kettle Creek Conservation Authority to increase tree planting in the community. This includes the Tree Power initiative, which is providing trees at discounted costs to hundreds of residents who want to plant trees on their properties.

Residents who purchased trees as part of this year’s Tree Power campaign can pick up their trees this Saturday at the Operations Centre (4475 Trafalgar Street) in Dorchester, between 9 am and 11 am.
