Work Begins to Preserve and Relocate Thorndale Sign
Stone Thorndale Sign Being Dismantled, To Be Placed in a New Location in 2027
THAMES CENTRE – One of two stone “Thorndale” signs on Thorndale Road is being dismantled, with key components being preserved for its pending reinstallation at a new location in 2027.
The original builders of the sign, McDonald Construction (Thorndale), have been awarded the contract to preserve the key components, including the name plate and cap stones, before the sign is removed from its current location at the corner of Thorndale Road and Nissouri Road.
“It seems like yesterday we were building these signs,” says Bill McDonald. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done building it, and we’re glad to have been the ones chosen for this preservation work.”
The stone Thorndale sign is one of two similar signs constructed on Thorndale Road at the east and west ends of the village in 2008. The other stone sign, located in front of the Thorndale Fire Station, will remain in place.
The sign at the corner of Thorndale and Nissouri sits on private property, which is being developed this spring. The five-ton sign was incompatible with proposed work that would raise the surface level of the land, and could not be included in the developer’s proposal.
Preservation work is scheduled for late April, with the removal of leftover small stones and the concrete base to follow immediately after the removal of the sign’s key components.
The Municipality is exploring alternative locations where the sign can be reinstalled.
“We’re going to be able to preserve the most important features of the sign,” says Ward 1 Councillor Tom Heeman. “That’s important. When a new location is chosen, and the sign is re-installed next year, it will still have the same major pieces in place, maintaining a connection to the original sign.”
