How To Join - Memberships and Renewals
Please note that members must be age 50 or over. The membership fee is $22.00 (includes GST) per person.  Membership renewal is every January. If you would like to become a member, please drop by anytime Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We look forward to meeting you.

The Lions Senior Centre is located at 2066 Dorchester Rd and is attached to the Community Centre and Arena Complex.

Well folks, it looks like the nice weather is here to stay. There have been so many pretty days. The flowers, trees and grass look so beautiful this time of year.

Get your scissors out and come by the Centre to participate in the craft workshop on June 7 at 9 a.m. We’ll be making table favours for the hot meal and enjoying a pot of coffee and a chat.

The next foot care clinic will take place on June 13 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. To make your appointment, call Nan at 519-686-0971. Take good care of your toes!

Celebrate summer by joining us for BBQ ribs on a bun, salads, potato chips and strawberry desserts. The fun will start at 12 noon on June 14 in the arena auditorium. Purchase or reserve your tickets as soon as possible.

The topic for the upcoming Snacks & Facts is “Fire Safety & Prevention for Seniors” on June 20 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Fire safety is important at every age, including in our senior years. Leaning the fire risks and how to deal with them can help save the life of yourself and your loved ones. Join Randy Kalan, DPA, DBA, CMM III, local Fire Chief, to learn about the different aspects of fire prevention and safety as a senior. Learn about how to keep you and your home safe and what to do in a fire emergency. To register for this free seminar call the VON at 519-268-7028.

Beat the heat, take a break from yard work and come see a movie! On June 21 (first day of summer) at 2 p.m. the feature presentation is “La La Land”.   Movie overview: A jazz pianist falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. Stars: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Rosemarie DeWitt. Popcorn, cold drinks and treats are included with the price of admission. See you at the picture show!

There are only 5 seats left on the bus trip to see “The Full Mounty” at the Lighthouse Theatre in Port Dover on June 28. The bus departs from the Centre at 9:15 a.m. About the show: Gordon is a retired Mountie who just can’t seem to shake his past. While minding his own business as a performer in Vegas, he gets drawn into a world of espionage and cover-ups. With the odds against him, he is forced to embark on a mission that pulls him back home to save his beloved country from an evil mastermind. We have many other day trips including “Niagara Belle Luncheon Cruise – July 19, “Niagara Peninsula & Winery Tour” – September 7, “Mariposa Cruise & Haunted Toronto Tour” – September 20, “Oktoberfest” at the Showplace Dinner Theatre – October 18.

The art adventures trips begin soon and are as follows: Museum London & London Clay Art Studio – June 30, Port Stanley Portside Gallery & Port Stanley Art Emporium – July 7, Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre – July 19, Sparta Winter Wheat & Sparta Artists Collective – July 28, St. Thomas Elgin Public Art Centre & Quai Du Vin Estate Winery – August 11. All of these art trips depart from the Centre at 1 p.m. and return to the Centre by 4:30 p.m. Call or email the Centre to register for these free excursions.

Do you like to play cards? There’s a bid euchre tournament on June 30 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. A delicious lunch is included with the price of admission. Cash prizes to be won. Pop by before 10 a.m. to enjoy a coffee and a Tim Bit. For more information call Eileen Tupholme at 519-425-2111.

In community bid euchre on May 25 the winners were as follows: Mary Anderson & Glen Smith. On June 1 the winners were Marilyn Reed and Martin VanBommel.

Community Centre - Programs and Activities

Craft Group (Craft and Chat)

This class is held when scheduled from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.  Participants of this class will make decorations or party favours for the centre events i.e. Hot Meals, Socials etc.  Instructor: Karen Gress.  For Info: call (519) 268-2025.

Acrylic Painting Lessons

This New, Exciting Program will be instructed by artist Susan Graham.  These 6 classes will cover different techniques & ways of using acrylic paints with various subject matter.  Sometimes you’ll paint on paper, other times on canvas and you’ll also learn about pencil drawing/sketching.  Dates: September 9th & 23rd, October 21st, November 11th & 25th and December 9th.  For more information call (519) 268-2025


Hot Meals

Special Event Luncheons

Luncheons are held on certain Wednesdays at 12 noon in the Dorchester Arena Auditorium and everyone enjoys an excellent meal, along with great fun.  The cost is $12.00 per person.  Please contact the Centre for more details.  Please purchase your tickets as soon as possible.

Pole Walking

Walk your way to fitness every Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the arena walking track.  The cost is pay-as-you-go $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.

What is Urban Poling? Urban Poling is a sport that combines the aerobic and strength building benefits of cross-country skiing with walking.  This class is held in the Dorchester arena auditorium (walking track) or outside weather permitting.  Urban Pole Walking is a full body, cardio-muscular exercise.  Benefits include: 20-40% higher caloric expenditure for weight loss, 25% increased cardiovascular workout, highly effective for core muscle strengthening, reduced impact on knee/hip joints and increased stability & balance.

Bike Riding Group

Join the gang on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. for an hour of cruising around town.  This is activity is weather permitting and runs from approximately mid April until mid October.  We take different routes each week, gradually adding hills.  This is a fun, scenic way to get exercise and lots of fresh air.  Free for members.  A bike helmet is reccommended and it's a good idea to wear comfortable, brightly coloured clothing and make sure to bring a water bottle.  Call 519-268-2025.

Computer Lessons

Beginner and intermediate computer lessons are available for Windows 10 & MacBook.  These classes include instruction on general use of the computer, internet, email etc.  Also available are iPad classes.  Lessons are held Tuesdays - Thursdays at 9:00 a.m.  The cost is $60.00 for members & $70.00 for non-members for a 6 week session (1 hours per class).  Call 519-268-2025 for more information.

Digital Camera Lessons

Learn how to operate your digital camera, download your pictures, crop your photos, etc.  Please bring your digital camera, a blank memory card & your USB cord to class with you. The cost is $60.00 for members & $70.00 for non-members for a 6 week session.  You should have some computer knowledge before taking the camera course.  Please call 519-268-2025 for details.

Thorndale Seniors Group

The Thorndale seniors meet the third Wednesday of every month at 2:30 p.m. at the Thorndale Library. These "Wonderful Wednesdays" feature a guest speaker or entertainment and delicious light refreshments. For more information call 519-461-1150.

Senior Choir

New voices are always welcome in this choir.  If you enjoy singing come and join this fun group every Friday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. with Mary Kaiser as the leader/pianist.

Croon-a-Long

Join sing-a-long leader Deb Cordi to sing some old time favourites including 50's, 60's, 70's tunes like Walkin' After Midnight, Memories Are Made of This, I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water, Darlin; Bye Bye Love, Come a Little Bit Closer.  Lyrics will be handed out.  Two Tuesdays every month.  Free for members.

Pickleball Lessons

Learn the skills and rules of the game.  Meet in the gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12 noon.  Free for members.  There is a fee for non-members.  Paddles and balls are provided during the lessons.

Quilting

This fun and creative group meets every Monday from 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.  It’s only $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members.  Go on exciting outings i.e. Shop & Hop.  The first Monday of every month the group will be sewing bed pads for cancer patients.  Join "The Ragged Edge Quilters" Guild.  Call (519) 268-2025 for more information.

Bridge

Come out for a morning of fun and friendship every Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  It’s $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.

Knitting & Crocheting Lessons

This talented group get together to create beautiful items. If you need any direction the group will help you.  This class is every Monday from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  It’s $2.00 for members & $4.00 for non-members.

Bid Euchre

Join us every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a fun evening of bid euchre.  There is a lunch served and the evening will only cost you $3.00.

Pilates

This class runs for 8 weeks on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. The cost is $50.00 for members and $60.00 for non-members.  Pay-as-you-go is $8.00.  Instructor: Krista Dolbear.  Pilates is a method of exercise endorsed by physicians for almost a century.  It has become one of today’s most sought after workouts that helps strengthen and condition muscles, reduce and eliminate back ache, dramatically improves posture, flexibility and balance as well as getting you on your way to long, lean, toned muscles and a flat stomach.  Call (519) 268-2025 for more information.

DrumFit
This is a fast-paced, non-competitive fitness program that combines music, movement and drumming.  We only have one rule: YOU MUST HAVE FUN!  It is guaranteed to leave you smiling, inspired and wanting more!  This program runs for 8 weeks at a cost of $40.00 for members & $50.00 for non-members.  Drum sticks, balls and bases are all provided.  Certified DrumFit instructor: Diana Dietrich.  We encourage participants to sign up for the entire 8 week session.

Gentle Yoga

Join certified instructor, June Ross, on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. as she leads you through a gentle, invigorating class that will increase your flexibility, build strength and create balance, while reducing stress.  The class will end with a guided relaxation.  This 8 week course is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members or $4.00/$5.25 pay-as-you-go.

Tai Chi

This class takes place every Monday from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. with June Ross.  Tai Chi is an ancient form of Chinese exercise using slow, rhythmic movements to help improve balance, breathing and help maintain a better range of motion.  This 8 week course is $30.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members or $4.00/$5.25 pay-as-you-go.  This class is also offered in Thorndale at the Library on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. 

Clogging

Diana Dietrich will teach you the steps to some fun dances every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.  The cost $40.00 for members & $50.00 for non-members for an 8 week session.

Step N Out Aerobics Class

This exercise program emphasizes: Balance, Breathing, Memory skills, Muscle coordination, Improved Circulation and Awareness of the mind, body, and spirit connection.  It combines Dance, Tai Chi, Core strengthening and Low Impact Aerobics, in a way that gradually gets your body moving, the way it used to.  Join instructor Bev Dukes every Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in the Arena Auditoirum.  Pay-as-you-go $4.00 for members and $5.25 for non-members.


Boot Camp for Boomers

This is a dynamic program for seniors designed to maintain bone density, cardiovascular health, balance, coordination and weight management.  Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.  The cost is $40.00 members/$50.00 non-members for an 8 week session.  Instructor: Shannon O'Halloran.  Please register in advance for this course.

Line dancing

Every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. to learn fun, upbeat line dances.  Beginners are welcome to arrive at 8:30 a.m. for some extra instruction on the steps.  The cost is $15.00 members/$25.00 non-members for an 8 week session or pay-as-you-go $3.00 members/$5.00 non-members.  It’s great exercise.

Square dancing

This Instructional Community Dance Program is lead by caller Art Ferris and runs every Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  The cost is $3.00 per person, pay as you go.

Carpet Bowling

Come out and learn this enjoyable sport. This game is similar to lawn bowling but it’s indoors.  Join the group every Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  It’s $2.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members. 

433 Euchre

Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Shuffleboard
