The swim test rules are as follows:

  • They must swim on their front 2 widths of the pool in the shallow end (25metres) without touching the bottom or the side
  • They must have the ability to put their face in the water and keep their feet at the surface
  • They must also use a recognizable stroke (front crawl or breaststroke)
  • They must complete the test comfortably
  • They may only attempt the swim test once per day

If a child ages 7-10 successfully completes the swim test, they are permitted to swim on their own anywhere in the pool. If a child ages 0-6 successfully completes the swim test, they are permitted to swim anywhere in the pool if they remain within arm's reach of an adult (14 years or older) at all times.

If a child is unsuccessful, they must remain in the shallow end within arm's reach of an adult. (We are usually generous with children aged 7-10 that fail, and usually allow them to swim farther from their adult so long as they can stand.)
