Flight Centre Renovation: Enhancing Thames Centre

The FlightExec Centre's transformation is well underway! Our collective effort aims to elevate Thames Centre by revamping essential spaces within the premises. This project, undertaken in collaboration with MCI Design Build Corporation, is positioned to bring a host of enhancements to the heart of Thames Centre.

Project Overview

Expected to reach completion by August 2024, this initiative is driven by a vision to expand and elevate key areas within the FlightExec Centre:

Senior Centre Expansion

The Senior Centre is set to expand, introducing three multi-purpose rooms and a new kitchen shared with the adjacent auditorium. This expansion aims to accommodate a larger number of seniors, facilitating their participation in various year-round events. The increase in space allocated to VON Middlesex-Elgin will enable the relocation of the therapeutic tub and the expansion of the Adult Day Program area. This move will welcome more clients daily. Additionally, the expansion will introduce new rooms for overnight respite care.

VON Middlesex-Elgin Upgrades

Significantly expanding the rented space for VON enables the relocation of the therapeutic tub. This extension facilities community bathing facilities and amplifies the capacity of the Adult Day Program to accommodate more clients daily. Furthermore, new rooms will be introduced to provide overnight respite services.

Auditorium Enhancement

Enlargement and relocation of the auditorium within the revamped facility, coupled with access to a new shared kitchen with the Senior Centre, ensuring a more versatile and accommodating space for larger events and gatherings.

Parking and Vehicle Access

Construction perimeter fencing is in place, resulting in NO ACCESS around the north-east side of the building until sometime in mid 2024. There will be an effort to reduce this fencing during the "Clash on the Thames" Provincial Curling Championships in late January 2024 in order to open up the north-east parking lot during that event. Refer to the drawing below to see where driving and parking will be blocked by the construction site along with the proposed driving route (subject to change).

Senior Centre Programs During Construction

The existing Senior Centre has been demolished in order to provide a more open floor plan with the new layout. As a result, all services and programs offered by the Senior Centre will be moved to alternative locations, including other rooms within the FlightExec Centre, the Dorchester Library, the Thorndale Lions Community Centre, and at the Dorchester Fairgrounds.

During construction, The Senior Centre Coordinator and Assistant’s offices will be relocated to the south side of the FlightExec Centre, in the same administrative/office area currently occupied by the Community Services & Facilities administration and management staff. Office hours will continue to be weekdays from 8:30am-4:30pm.  The Senior Centre staff will still be able to be reached at their regular phone numbers and email addresses.

VON Programs During Construction

During construction, VON programs will continue to be offered. VON office space and Adult Day Program have been relocated to space upstairs in the FlightExec Centre and be accessible by the stairs and elevator on the north side of the building (entering via the automatic doors labelled “Auditorium & North Rink – CANUSA.”

Office hours will remain the same, Monday to Friday from 8am-4pm. Adult Day Program will continue to run Monday to Friday from 9am-3pm. The Staff will still be able to be reached at their regular phone numbers and email addresses.
